Unmon-ji Temple, founded in 1597 during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, is a Zen temple of the Soto school where 430 years of prayers have accumulated. We are honored to offer an authentic Zen meditation experience here.
Under the guidance of Rev. Furutani Kodai, who became the 23rd head priest last year, you can experience Zazen in the temple's sacred main hall. Available only on select dates—experience a truly special day.
Day 1: Arrival and Inner Cleansing Check in to "Guest Inn-Yashiro-No-Mori" and begin your journey. Start with a light, vegetarian-based BBQ using fresh local vegetables from the nearby farmers' market. By lightening your body from the inside out, you will fully attune yourself to the profound silence of the forest night.
Day 2: Stillness and Prayer at the Zen Temple Wake up to the crisp forest air and enjoy a peaceful stroll through the surroundings. In the afternoon, we visit Unmon-ji, a historic Zen temple. As you climb the moss-covered stone steps, the process of centering your mind begins. Experience a profound moment of Zazen (seated meditation) in the sacred main hall—a dignified space that naturally commands respect. Spend a time of prayer where your mind becomes transparent from the core. After meditation, soothe your soul with "Kissa-Ko," a traditional Matcha tea service.
Day 3: Revitalization through Satoyama Cycling After aligning your body and mind, end your tour with a light, refreshing activity. Glide through the Satoyama landscape on an electric-assist bicycle. Our local supporters will guide you to the season's most beautiful spots, with a support car following for your peace of mind.
For Train Travelers: Cycle all the way to the nearest station for departure.
For Car Travelers: Return to Yashiro-No-Mori for dismissal.
